Book Review: “Bread and Wine”

My book club, “The Finer Things,” just recently finished up Bread & Wine: A Love Letter to Life Around the Table with Recipes by Shauna Niequist. I borrowed a friend’s copy to take on my recent trip to Florida thinking that I could save money by not purchasing my own copy. However, I had read 80% of it by the time I had got home and loved it so much I ordered my own copy online.

Bread & Wine is a collection of essays about family, relationships, and the food that makes life just a little bit sweeter. Each “chapter” ends with a recipe, and to my surprise many of them were simple to prepare and gluten and dairy free. The author challenged her readers to take cooking risks, something I’ve never been known to do, in order to grow and learn to be a comfortable host. After reading her book, I’m so excited to own a home in order to fill it with people all the time.

When my book club met to discuss the book, each of us prepared one recipe from the book which made for a buffet table of flavors. It was great to see the recipes we read come to life on our plates.

I would definitely recommend Bread & Wine for individual reading, but especially in a group setting.
